The Directorate-General for Translation’s gender-neutral English guidelines (1998-2022)

Abstract Ten years before the European Parliament adopted Gender-neutral language in multilingual guidelines (2008), Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation had already included a section on this subject third edition of its English Style Guide (1998). The original text was later reproduced other Union’s style guides, namely Interinstitutional , Commission and ephemeral Guidelines Inclusive Communication withdrawn shortly after publication due to political religious complaints. After quarter century, have drifted apart through their respective updates. What are exact inconsistencies current guides? How do changes reflect developments field inclusive language? And include gendered terms expressions relevant EU linguists? A unified policy linguistic sexism across languages institutions expressed set coherent seems vital enabling fostering implementation non-sexist as gender mainstreaming tool EU.
